Instruction for the WEPP and WEPS soil generation program (soilgen) ------------------------------------------------------------------- The program (soilgen) is designed to make WEPP and WEPS soil input files using USDA-NRCS Soil-5 data base. Several assumptions have been made while calculating soil texture and soil water parameters. After successful installation of the program in your computer's C drive, you will have the following subdirectories. c:\usrs --inout ---s5dat......(contains s5 data files) ---weppsol....(contains WEPP and WEPS soil files) --wepsoil---s5.........(contains S5 search program) ---input......(contains I/O program) ---wepp.......(contains calculation program) The soil-5 input files will be in the s5dat directory. To generate WEPP and WEPS soil input files, change directory to the wepp directory, type "soilgen" and answer the questions. Please note that the soil-5 data for the state of interest MUST BE in the s5dat directory in order for the program to run. The program accepts a two character code for each state (i.e, IN for state of Indiana). The program will make 4 files and store them in the weppsol directory. The file names start with the soil series name with the last character of c (for WEPP soil input for cropland) and r (for WEPP soil input file for rangeland). The extensions for these files are *.sol. The file which has an extension *.wps is a soil input file for the wind erosion model (WEPS). The file with an extension *.erd is for information only and contains the detailed information about the soil series. Please note that the soil-5 data base does not contain all the information needed to make the WEPP and WEPS soil input file for some soil series. Therefore, the program is not capable of making WEPP and WEPS soil input files for those soils. Good Luck.
