----------< To Transfer Files to your PC via FTP >------------------------------ The most current WEPP news, model, documentation, and databases can always be accessed through connection to the NSERL file server via the Internet. 1 Using the FTP program, connect to the file server storing the WEPP and CPIDS programs by typing: ftp topsoil.nserl.purdue.edu OR ftp 128.210.150.201 2 Logon as ftp or anonymous. Enter your name as the password. Name: ftp OR anonymous Password: yourname 3 Set the transfer type to binary by typing: binary 4 Set for noninteractive transfer by typing: prompt 5 Move to the directory of choice: cd wepp/wepp.995 (for the 5/99 full WEPP-DOS installation) cd wepp/weppbeta (for the 5/99 Beta-3 WEPP Windows interface) cd wepp/wepp.984 (for the 4/98 full WEPP installation) cd wepp/weppupg.984 (for the 4/98 partial WEPP install) cd wepp/document (for the current WEPP user summary doc) cd wepp/cligen (for CLIGEN program or state files) cd wepp/cligen/maps (for climate file builder map files) cd cpids (for CPIDS programs and database) * - directory containing most recent WEPP version may be different from this. See on-line README files for help. 6 Get the desired file(s) using the GET or MGET commands by typing: mget *.* OR get cligen.exe (for example) 7 Quit the FTP program by typing: quit ----------< To Install the WEPP 99.5 Programs on a DOS PC>--------------------- 1 Download the following files from the wepp.995 public FTP directory for a minimum installation of WEPP Version 99.5: INSTALL.EXE INSTALL.CFG NEWINFO.TXT WEPP995.SHR If you would like climate data for additional regions of the United States, load additional archive files (ZZ97SE.EXE, etc.). (NOTE: The additional climate archive files are unchanged from those released with the full install version of WEPP v97.3). 2 Move to the directory on your hard drive which contains the WEPP installation programs (i.e. CD C:\FTPTRSFR ). 3 Type the command: INSTALL 4 When prompted, enter the hard drive partition of choice. The WEPP programs and files will be placed in the \WEPP directory. 5 If you have installed the DOS interface with v99.5 to a PC running Windows 95 or 98, there are several things that must be done to get WEPP to operate properly. The specification of a text editor to be used by the DOS program must be changed from C:\DOS\EDIT.COM to C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EDIT.COM in the WEPPKIDS.DEF file in the \WEPP directory. Also, to run the complete DOS interface including the management and irrigation file builders, you must shut down windows and restart in true MS-DOS mode. See the following Web site for more info: http://topsoil.nserl.purdue.edu/weppmain/weppfaq/weppfaq.html ----------< To Use the WEPP DOS programs after Installation >----------------------- The installation program creates a directory called WEPP on the hard drive partition that you chose. To run the WEPP Hillslope Interface program, move to the \WEPP directory and type: HILL To run the WEPP Watershed Interface program, move to the \WEPP directory and type: SHED A basic understanding of the WEPP Hillslope Interface is recommended before attempting to conduct Watershed simulations. -------< To Install the WEPP Windows Beta-3 Interface for Win 95/98/NT >------- 1 Download the following file from the wepp/weppbeta public FTP directory: WEPPWIN.EXE 2 Move to the directory on your hard drive which contains the WEPP installation programs (i.e. CD C:\DOWNLOAD ). 3 Execute the Windows installation program (double click on WEPPWIN.EXE) 4 Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Beta-3 Windows interface. 5 Please remember that the Windows Beta-3 interface is only a test version and is incomplete and contains known bugs. Be sure and do a binary transfer to your PC. INSTALL.EXE INSTALL.CFG WEPP98UP.EXE IVINST.EXE 2 You must already have version 95.7 or 97.3 installed and working on your PC. If you want to save the old v95.7 or v97.3 executable, be sure and rename it before you copy the new executable in the directory. 3. Run the program INSTALL.EXE and follow the on-screen instructions. 4. To run the new WEPP model patch, go to the \WEPP directory and type either "HILL" or "SHED" to start the interface program. ----------< Troubleshooting the WEPP programs >--------------------------------- Problem Solution ------------------------------------ -------------------------------- The management and irrigation file in CONFIG.SYS, change builders do not run. DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS to: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM and re-boot. if you are running DOS 6.+, it is nice to have start-up menus for the necessary WEPP settings above. The management and irrigation file that's right. the management and builders do not run under Windows. irrigation builders are compiled with a 32-bit compiler which does not support Windows API - the rest of the WEPP Interface will work while running Windows.. running under Windows may also cause WEPP itself not to run, due to lack of enough environment space or memory. work is underway to allow the WEPP Interface to run under the Windows environment, however. "Out of environment space" message the WEPP interface programs add when you try to run HILL or SHED variables to your system environment. some stock systems may not have sufficient environment space to hold them. to expand the environment type: COMMAND /E:2000 you may wish to make this a permanent change to your system. if this is the case, you will need to edit the following line in your CONFIG.SYS file and then re-boot your machine: SHELL=...\COMMAND.COM /e:2000 /p The WEPP program will not execute Make sure that you have specified properly, and an error message enough open files in your CONFIG.SYS such as "file already exists" file, then re-boot your computer: is written FILES=50 ----------< PC System Requirements >-------------------------------------------- 1 Personal Computer with a 386 or greater CPU & a math coprocessor 2 DOS 5.0 or greater 3 At least 10.0 MBytes free hard disk space for base system 4 At least a CGA graphics monitor for the graphing programs ----------< Nice, but not necessary >------------------------------------------- 1 mouse. 2 fast disk drive. 3 VGA monitor. 4 a pentium ----------< WEPP Installed Files >--------------------------------------------- The following files and directories will be created during a full WEPP installation: \WEPP\NEWINFO.TXT - important notes on usage \WEPP\HILL.BAT - entry-point for the WEPP hillslope interface \WEPP\SHED.BAT - entry-point for the WEPP watershed interface \WEPP\WEPPKIDS.DEF - common paths and defaults file \WEPP\XIP.BAT - required installation file \WEPP\UTIL - utilities for the interface \WEPP\WEPP - the WEPP erosion model location \WEPP\HELPS - general and program help files \WEPP\INPUT - input files and builders \CHANNEL - WCHN channel file builder and files \CLIMATE - CLIGEN climate builder and files \HILL - hillslope scenario information \IMPOUND - WIMP impoundment file builder and files \IRR - WIRR irrigation builder and files \MAN - WMAN management file builder and files \SHED - watershed interface program \SLOPE - WSLP slope builder and files \SOIL - WSOL soil builder and files \WEPP\OUTPUT - output files and viewers \DUMPS - location for text and graphics dumps \ERROR - error/warning output files \EVENT - event/ofe output files \PLOT - EGRAPH graphical viewer and plot files \RANGE - rangeland/animal output files \SINGLE - single-storm output files \SOILS - water/plant/soil output files \SUMMARY - soil loss summary output files \WGR - WWGR graphical viewer \WINTER - winter routine output files \WSHED - watershed output files \YIELD - plant yield output files ----------< WEPP Access on the World-Wide-Web >--------------------------------- WEPP materials and information are also available through a World-Wide-Web (WWW) page viewable through a Web browser such as Mosaic or Lynx. The URL for the National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory's home page is: http://topsoil.nserl.purdue.edu ----------< Other Files Obtainable from FTP and the WWW >---------------------- The anonymous FTP logon to "soils.ecn.purdue.edu" can also be used to obtain some other related WEPP programs, data files, and documents. /pub/wepp/cligen contains the CLIGEN executable program, stations file, and the state database files for the United States. The user needs to copy the state data files of choice (TX for example, for Texas) to the WEPP\INPUT\CLIMATE directory. /pub/wepp/cligen/maps contains the WEPP Climate File Builder interface state map files. The user needs to copy the state map files of choice (TX.* for example, for Texas) to his/her WEPP\INPUT\CLIMATE\MAPS directory. /pub/wepp/document contains the WEPP User Summary Document for the current version in a REPLICA executable file, which must be executed under Microsoft Windows. To obtain the User Summary, put this file on the hard drive on your PC, start up Microsoft Windows, then from the Program Manager File Options, select "Run" and enter the REPLICA file name ( USERSUM.EXE ). The REPLICA viewing program will be installed on your PC under windows, and you will automatically be put into viewing the User Summary Document. You can also print part or all of the document using REPLICA. REPLICA is a Microsoft Windows Application made by Farallon Computing Inc., Alameda, California. /pub/cpids contains the CPIDS (Crop Parameter Intelligent Database System) programs. These programs can be used to develop WEPP and RUSLE plant growth parameters for plants not in the default lists. See the CPIDS directory for more information. ----------< The ARS WEPP Erosion Prediction System >---------------------------- Brought to you by: USDA - Agricultural Research Service National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory 1196 Bldg SOIL, Purdue University West Lafayette, Indiana 47907-1196 USA phone: 765 494 8673 fax: 765 494 5948 email: wepp@ecn.purdue.edu Interface Programmers: David Whittemore (1992-1995) Anda Singher (1995-1996) Hailiang Fu (1996-1998) Jim Frankenberger (1998- ) WEPP Maintenance Team: Dennis Flanagan John Laflen Stanley Livingston Charles Meyer Agricultural Engineer WEPP Leader Soil Scientist Systems Analyst
