WEPP Project Formation

An increasing need for improved erosion prediction technology was recognized by the major research and action agencies of the United States Departments of Agriculture and Interior in the early 1980's. In 1985 these agencies embarked on a 10 year research and development effort to replace the Universal Soil Loss Equation. The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) has the objective "to develop new generation water erosion prediction technology for use by the USDA-Soil Conservation Service, USDA-Forest Service, USDI-Bureau of Land Management, and other organizations involved in soil and water conservation and environmental planning and assessment" (WEPP User Requirements: Draft 6.3).

WEPP is a joint effort of the following agencies:

  1. USDA - Agricultural Research Service (ARS)
  2. USDA - Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
  3. USDA - Forest Service (FS)
  4. USDI - Bureau of Land Management (BLM)

"This Project will provide these agencies with a new generation, process-oriented technology for estimating erosion by water" (WEPP - User Requirements: Draft 6.3).
