Soil Erosion Prediction Technology

For over half a century, federal and state agencies, private industry, and individuals have attempted to estimate soil erosion caused by water. With the use of previous soil erosion prediction technology, soil conservation specialists have been able to develop new conservation methods and determine better land management techniques.

The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has, for many years, been the most utilized method for predicting sheet and rill erosion. However, new environmental concerns and new erosion modeling applications require the implementation of enhanced erosion prediction technology. "In addition to USLE's estimates of sheet and rill erosion, estimates are needed for erosion by concentrated flow, sediment delivery to locations on the landscape, and locations and amounts of deposition along the landscape and in waterways" (WEPP - User Requirements: Draft 6.3).
