on Landslides and Ground Failure Geohazards – I
Moderator: Rafael Bras, Georgia Institute of Technology
Location: Marbella Club
Landslides
are a common hazard in mountainous terrain worldwide, and they occur throughout
all US states and territories. Landslides claimed more than 18,000 lives
between 1998 and 2017 worldwide. The National Science Foundation is funding a
Track I Center Catalyst effort to formulate a national Collaborative Center for
Landslides and Ground Failure Geohazards. This workshop intends to begin the
process of securing input from the scientific and stakeholder community in the
designing of the center. Puerto Rico is being considered as a living laboratory,
an initial “Hub” in this proposal. This effort is being led by the Georgia
Institute of Technology (GT), the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM),
and the University of Colorado at Boulder (CUB). Please join us to discuss the
vision, mission and pressing science questions that a national Collaborative
Center for Landslides and Geohazards should address.

The Future
Direction of Erosion Science and Modeling
Moderator: Teferi Tsegaye, USDA-Agricultural
Research Service
Location:
Officer’s Club
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has a long
history of conducting basic research in soil erosion and developing erosion
assessment tools that are used for conservation planning and risk assessment.
In the United States, these wind and water erosion models have been used by the
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) nationwide for erosion planning
and implementation of Farm Bill programs. Research methodologies, field
measurements, and erosion prediction models developed by ARS scientists have
also been adopted worldwide. Erosion prediction technology has evolved from
empirical to process-based models, including sub-models for factors such as
water balance, plant growth, and land management, which affect and are altered
by erosion processes. Scientists currently work separately on wind and water
erosion research, and work in these two areas is additionally distinguished by
land use and land cover (i.e., cropland and rangeland). These differences
result in diverse input data requirements, spatial representation, and time
steps that present challenges in developing an integrated erosion tool
interface. There is an urgent need for ARS to formulate a coordinated effort to
develop the next generation soil erosion prediction system that contains the
most current erosion science with similar internal processes, use of common
databases, and graphical user interfaces. These predictions are made for
existing conditions and for a proposed set of alternative management practices
to provide erosion estimates used to guide the selection of a resource
management system for specific sites to meet on- and off-site management
objectives. This new erosion prediction tool needs to (1) have interfaces that
meet user needs and can incorporate data from future sensors and data sources,
and (2) implement software engineering standards so that the core scientific
engine can be maintained and updated seamlessly. The goal is to provide consistent
and accurate estimates of wind and water erosion using as few resources as
possible to optimize the quality and quantity of services that NRCS and other
field personnel provide to their clients. Therefore, the technology must be
based on concepts and principles that can be easily understood and described by
a range of stakeholders, including conservationists and land managers.
